I was called into ministry at the tender age of 16 and began training when I was 20. I studied theology at Bristol Baptist College and Bristol University before moving to Regent’s Park College, Oxford to pursue doctoral studies with the British New Testament scholar, and now Bishop of Durham, N. T. Wright. While at Oxford I wrote a DPhil thesis offering a rhetorical analysis of Paul’s letter to the Philippians (”Worthy of the Gospel of Christ: A Study in the Situation and Strategy of Paul’s Letter to the Philippians”). From there I went to be the Minister of Abbey Baptist Church, Reading from 1994-2000.
I arrived at Northern in February 2000 to take up the position of Tutor in New Testament. I teach courses in introductory and advanced hermeneutics and on key NT texts, especially Paul (Romans); Matthew and John. I also try to keep up to date with recent work in the area of Baptist/Anabaptist history and theology.
In addition to my work in Manchester, I serve the wider Baptist family in a number of ways. I have recently been closely involved in the work of the Faith and Unity Executive of BUGB as the Doctrine Co-ordinator. I currently serve as the Moderator of the Baptist Union Council. I am a regular speaker and preacher at conferences and churches.
I am married to Katherine and has two young daughters, Sophia and Lucy and together they share a love of all things Italian, not least the food.
